Fight Flukes like a pro!
Fight Flukes like a pro!

As with all products sold by Niwa Nishikigoi Ltd, there has to be solid evidence and/or personal experience before we will sell products to our customers.

Fluke-Ex recently took the market by storm, and a lot of UK koi, pond, and aquatic retail outlets have been selling vast quantities. Therefore, I needed to carry out some testing to see for myself what all the fuss is about.

The following is the product description...

FLUKE-EX® is a new unique product developed by Fish Treatment Ltd for use in ornamental ponds or tanks, with a number of benefits compared with existing products. It has been priced to give significant savings.
Efficacy has been demonstrated by extensive clinical trials to confirm it treats skin and gill flukes including all the resistant strains of flukes (where other treatments have failed) but it can also be used to treat Trichodina, Costia, tapeworms, roundworms and crustaceans such as Argulus (fish lice). It CAN be used in the presence of salt.
It uses the same proprietary technologyas the Fluke-Solve range so the method of administration is the same – simply rip, tip and stir. However in the case of gill flukes which lay eggs, as with previous products a second treatment is recommended after 3 weeks to break the flukes’ life cycle.
This treatment should only be used with Koi Carp.
It is effective from temperatures from 3 ̊C. Simple to use, safe and effective.
50g treats 2,750 gallons
100g treats 5,500 gallons

Sounds impressive! So, in a nutshell. It kills a lot of parasites, but is only safe on koi and can be used with salt. Sounds idyllic. Too good to be true?

As a koi dealer and koi enthusiast, one of my top priorities is ensuring the health and vitality of every koi that passes through my hands. Parasites, like flukes, trichodina, costia, tapeworms and roundworms are a constant threat to their wellbeing and any good koi dealers reputation.

Over the years, I've tried nearly every treatment on the market. Some worked well, others not so much.

In a retail or holding environment, where fish are frequently transported and stressed, fluke outbreaks can spread fast and hit hard. That’s why proactive and reliable treatment is essential.

After three trials using Fluke Ex, I have been very pleased with the outcome. With two separate doses all flukes were eradicated. That is the positive and as every koi keeper will tell you, flukes are not easy to eradicate.

Summary

The koi struggled for the first few days after day one of the treatments. They sulked on the bottom and looked extremely lethargic. I am sure it will cause concern for any hobbyist but rest assured, Fluke Ex is doing it's thing.

Even after two treatments with Fluke-Ex, I found costia and had to carry out a course of formalin and malachite, on two of the three trials.

So when all is said and done, Fluke Ex has passed The Niwa Nishikigoi Ltd test with flying colours. I carried out three tests and all three times the flukes were eradicated. However, costia was found still on two occasions.
